
Andesite vs Basalt for Outdoor Projects
Both are Indonesian volcanic stone, both perform outdoors, and the choice between them is usually made for the wrong reason. Here is the technical and practical comparison.
Andesite and basalt are both volcanic stones from the same Indonesian geological arc, both hard, both suitable for exterior use. Buyers frequently choose between them on colour alone, which works out fine about half the time.

Where basalt wins
Freeze–thaw climates
This is the decisive one. Water absorbed into stone expands when it freezes, and repeated cycles spall the surface. Dense basalt at under 2% absorption handles Northern European, Canadian and high-altitude conditions comfortably. Andesite at the upper end of its absorption range is more marginal — if your project is in a freeze–thaw climate and the specification does not name a maximum absorption figure, it should.
Heavy commercial and public paving
Higher compressive and flexural strength and better abrasion resistance make basalt the more durable specification for plazas, transport interchanges and anywhere with sustained public traffic.
Stain-sensitive interior floors
Lower porosity means better stain resistance. In a hotel lobby or restaurant floor, basalt tolerates spills better than andesite and considerably better than lava stone.
Where andesite wins
Barefoot surfaces in strong sun
Mid-grey reflects meaningfully more solar radiation than near-black. On a pool deck in Doha, Dubai or Northern Australia, that difference is the difference between a terrace people use and one they cross quickly. We have had a specification changed from dark stone to andesite on the basis of a surface-temperature test on sample panels in situ — and it was the right call.
Budget-sensitive volume
Andesite is more abundant, easier to work, and cheaper per square metre. On a 2,000 m² landscape package where the technical requirements are ordinary, the cost difference is real and the performance difference is not.
Colour consistency across large areas
Andesite is remarkably uniform. On a large single-material plaza, that consistency is worth more than a marginal strength advantage.
What about lava stone?
Black lava stone is a third option and a different proposition: a vesicular basalt with open porosity, typically 3–6% absorption. It is chosen for character — the pinhole texture that catches light — rather than performance. Use it on facades, feature walls and dark pools; do not use it where dense basalt's technical properties are the reason for the specification.

- Large area, ordinary requirements, cost matters → andesite.
