Black lava stone wall cladding on a contemporary villa facade in Indonesia
Volcanic basalt

Black Lava Stone

Indonesian basalt from the Java volcanic belt, quarried as a dense dark stone with fine natural porosity. Specified where architecture calls for depth, matte darkness and a surface that stays visually calm in strong sunlight.

Deep volcanic black with a naturally porous character.

Black Lava Stone is a basalt formed from cooled volcanic flow along the Java volcanic belt. Its surface carries fine vesicular porosity — the pinholes left by gas as the lava set — which is what separates it visually from a manufactured dark tile and gives the material its depth under raking light.

It is a hard, dimensionally stable stone that takes a flamed, bush hammered or honed finish equally well. Architects specify it for dark-bottom pools, monolithic facades, stair treads and terraces where a matte, non-reflective black is wanted rather than a polished one.

Because the porosity is open, we recommend a penetrating sealer for interior floors and any surface exposed to oil or food. For exterior and submerged applications the stone is normally left unsealed.

Questions

Black Lava Stone — FAQ

On exterior and submerged surfaces, no — rain and pool water clear the surface. On interior floors and kitchen surfaces we recommend a penetrating impregnating sealer, reapplied roughly every two to three years depending on traffic.

Any dark stone absorbs solar heat. For barefoot pool decks in high-sun markets we usually recommend a lighter coping — andesite or limestone — with lava stone used on walls and waterline instead.

Yes. 15–20 mm panels are standard for adhered cladding. For mechanically fixed rainscreen systems specify 30 mm and send the fixing detail so we can machine the kerfs or anchor holes.
