
How Natural Stone Is Packed for Export
Stone arrives broken for a small number of specific reasons, almost all of them decided before the container doors close. This is what correct export packing looks like.
A container of stone travels several thousand nautical miles, is lifted four or five times, and spends weeks being vibrated by a marine engine. Whether it arrives intact is decided almost entirely by decisions made before the doors close.
On edge, never flat
Stone is packed standing on edge. Stacked flat, the full weight of the stack concentrates on the bottom pieces and on any point where a piece bridges a gap. Flexural failure follows, and it usually shows up as pieces cracked cleanly across the middle rather than chipped at the edges.
On edge, the load runs through the thickness of the stone, which is its strongest axis, and the crate walls take the lateral force.
Separation and protection
- Foam or bubble sheet between pieces to prevent face-to-face abrasion in transit.
- Corner protection on every crate — corners are where impact damage concentrates.
- Polished and honed faces additionally film-wrapped, face to face where possible.
- Internal bracing for carved, perforated or irregular pieces, which cannot rely on adjacent stone for support.
The crate
A proper export crate is a structural object, not a box. Timber sized to the load, plywood facing, a base built for forklift entry from at least two sides, and steel or PET strapping around the whole assembly. Crate weight is kept to what site handling equipment at destination can manage — normally under 1,500 kg per crate unless the buyer confirms otherwise.
Every crate is stencil-marked with item code, material, size, finish, quantity, gross weight and crate number, and the packing list matches crate by crate. This matters more than it sounds: it is what lets a site unload the right crate first rather than opening six to find the coping.
ISPM 15 — the one that stops containers
International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 requires wooden packing material in international trade to be heat-treated or fumigated and stamped with a compliance mark. Almost every destination enforces it.
A container arriving with unmarked wooden packing may be refused entry, held for treatment at the importer's cost, or in some jurisdictions ordered destroyed. It is entirely avoidable, and confirming ISPM 15 compliance in writing before shipment takes one line in an email.
Palletisation
Crates are palletised or built on integral bases so they can be moved with a standard forklift. Loose crates that require manual handling or a crane at destination create cost and risk the buyer did not price for.
For loose material — pebble, aggregate — woven bulk bags of around 1,000 kg on pallets, shrink-wrapped, are the standard format.
Container loading and weight
Stone containers are almost always weight-limited rather than volume-limited. A 20ft container typically carries 25–27 tonnes of stone, which fills perhaps two thirds of the available volume. Loading to full volume produces an overweight container that may be legal to move at origin and illegal to move at destination.
Check the road-legal weight limit at the destination port before loading. It varies by country and sometimes by state. Weight is distributed evenly across the container floor and blocked and braced so the load cannot shift in transit.
What good packing looks like on arrival
- Crates upright, strapping intact, no visible crushing or racking.
- Stencil marks legible and matching the packing list.
- ISPM 15 mark clearly visible on the timber.
- Stone on edge inside, separated, with corner protection in place.
- Breakage within 1–2%, concentrated at crate corners rather than distributed through the load.
Distributed breakage through the middle of crates means flat stacking or inadequate separation. Corner damage means handling. The pattern of damage tells you where the problem was, which is useful when it comes to resolving it.
