Dark Bottom Reflection Pool
Honed black lava below the waterline turns the pool into a still reflective plane; bush hammered grey andesite on the deck keeps the barefoot surface usable in Andalusian summer.
Project detail
A dark-bottom pool works optically by removing the visible floor, so the surface reflects sky and architecture rather than showing a coloured basin. Honed rather than textured tile was essential — surface texture scatters the reflection.
The deck material was deliberately the opposite: mid-grey andesite, bush hammered, chosen for surface temperature and wet grip. Using dark stone on both would have made the terrace unusable barefoot from June to September.
Coping was machined in andesite rather than lava stone, giving a clean light edge that frames the dark water — the contrast is what makes the reflection read.
