Black Lava Stone Villa
Split face black lava on the entry and boundary elevations, with honed flat panels on the sheltered courtyard walls. The contrast between the two finishes in one material carries the whole exterior composition.
Project detail
The architect wanted a single dark material across the exterior but not a single reading of it. Split face was used where the elevation catches morning and evening sun, so the relief is active; honed flat panel was used in the courtyard where light is diffuse all day and texture would have gone flat.
Sixty linear metres of mitred L-corner pieces were produced in matching material so external corners show stone on both faces with no visible substrate — the detail that separates a stone building from a stone-clad one.
The internal fireplace surround was cut from the same batch, which required reserving material at the start of production against a wall that was not built until eight months later.
